How to Refresh or Remove Old Permanent Makeup for Better Brows

Got blurry, faded, or discoloured brows from a previous PMU treatment? You’re not stuck with them forever. There are multiple ways to improve—or completely renew—your brow look.

Why Does PMU Fade or Blur?

Several things can impact how your brows age:

  • Oily skin can blur pigment faster

  • Low-quality pigments may fade to orange, grey, or blue

  • Too-deep application often turns ashy

  • Sun exposure and skincare ingredients can speed up fading

3 Main Options for Improving Old PMU

1. Removal or Lightening
If the pigment is too dark or uneven, removal might be best:

  • Saline removal (gentler, good for all pigments)

  • Laser removal (best for dark colours)

  • Natural fading (sometimes, waiting is best)

2. Colour Correction
This technique neutralises unwanted tones (e.g. grey, blue, orange) before applying new pigment.

3. A Refresh with New Technique
If enough fading has occurred, you may be able to refresh your brows with:

  • Hyperrealism Brows (my speciality!)

  • Powder Brows or hybrid designs

Can You Get Hyperrealism Brows Over Old Work?

Sometimes! It depends on how much of your previous pigment is still present. Hyperrealism works best on a light or faded base—too much pigment can interfere with the softness and flow.

💡 I recently worked with a client who had very old microblading. It had faded just enough, and we created a stunning new set of Hyperrealism Brows that blended beautifully.

How to Prep for the Best Results

  • Avoid harsh skincare (retinols, acids) near the brow area

  • Let brows fade before seeking new treatment

  • Protect with SPF daily
